- On Jan 2020, WHO has announced Global health emergency, so that all countries can planout against this pandemic disease and prepare themself to handle Covid-19.
In Geneva press conference, Mr.Tedros said very specifically PLEASE DO NOT MAKE ANY MISTAKE, this disease will not leave the world so early. And let me tell you, more than 1,90,000 people have lost their life due to the Corona Virus & more than 27 lacs people are Corona positive till date and still the numbers are increasing day by day. As far as India is concern as on date 24 April 2020, Reported corona positive cases are 23,077 total number of deaths are 718 and 4,749 people have cured from Corona virus.
- Now, the new story begins, America has raised finger on the working of World Health Organization for handling Corona and demanded resignation of Director General of WHO.
- After this, US President Donald Trump has said he is going to halt funding to WHO because it has “failed in its basic duties” in its response to the corona outbreak.
- He also accused the UN agency of mismanaging and covering up the spread of the virus after it emerged in China and said it must be accountable.
In response UN chief said it was not the time to cut funds to the WHO and said Mr.Trump has been under fire for his own handling of the pandemic as he acted too slowly to stop the virus spread in order to place restrictions of traveling or lockdown.
- At press conference Mr. Donald Trump has said on white house: I am directing my administration to halt funding while a review is conducted to assess the WHO role in severely mismanaging and covering up the spread of corona virus.
- The US is the global health body largest single funder and gave it more than $ 400 million in last fiscal year 2018-19.
- Then, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said international community should be uniting in solidarity to stop this virus and its my belief that WHO must be supported .
- Germany foreign minister also tweeted to strengthening the under funded WHO.
- Bill Gates, the Microsoft founder has also tweeted: “Halting funding for the World Health Organization during a world health crisis is as dangerous as it sounds.” Their work is slowing the spread of COVID-19 and if that work is stopped no other organization can replace them. The world needs WHO now more than ever.
- The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is the second-largest funder of the WHO.

- Founded in 1948 and based in Geneva, Switzerland, its a of UN agency responsible for global public health has 194 member states and aims to promote health, keep the world safe and serve the vulnerable.
- Funded by a combination of members fees based on wealth and population and voluntary contributions too.
- US provided $400 million and China gave about $86 million in 2018-19.
What is Donald Trump’s argument?
- “With the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, we have deep concerns whether America’s generosity has been put to the best use possible,” the US president said.
- The US has highest number of coronavirus cases and deaths worldwide- with more than 600,000 cases and 26,000 deaths.
Mr.Trump accused the WHO having failed out assessing the situation held in early months in the city of Wuhan and raised finger on China lack of transparency. And said, If WHO analysize the situation timely then we could save thousands of life and avoided economic damage worldwide. Instead WHO willingly took China assurances and defended the action of Chinese Government.
- WHO experts were only allowed to visit China and investigate the outbreak on 10 February, by which time the country had more than 40,000 cases.
- White House reporters pointed out that Mr Trump himself praised China’s response to the outbreak and downplayed the danger of the virus after the WHO had declared a “public health emergency of international concern”.
- Democrats accused him of trying to shift blame away from himself in an election year, but many Republicans in Congress praised his decision to cut funding.
On this criticism, President pointed out on 14 January, the organization tweeted that preliminary Chinese investigation has found no clear evidence of human to human transmission of new virus but WHO simply believed China, despite evidence to the contrary. But about a week after that tweet, on 22 January, the agency released a public statement saying that human-to-human transmission did appear to be taking place in Wuhan.
At the end of January, on the same day it declared a public health emergency, the WHO said that travel restrictions were not needed to stop the spread of Covid-19 – advice that was eventually ignored by most countries , including by the Trump administration the next day.

Administration officials have been sharply accusing the WHO of missteps in the handling of the pandemic, saying it was biased towards China.
They say WHO was too ready to support China’s deceptive early claims about the virus and then didn’t push hard enough against China attempts to cover up its misinformation. In particular President Trump has latched onto the WHO’s criticism of his travel restrictions against China.
But to defund the WHO is part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to curtail China’s growing global influence.
It is biggest news that America has defunded WHO and it will really impact as whole and it will also make a big question mark on reputation and working of World Health Organisation.
